Felony Animal Cruelty Petition

The process is underway to collect signatures for a ballot initiative that will put changes to animal cruelty law in Idaho on the November 2012 ballot.

Here are the Details!

First Some Background:

  • There have been several failed attempts in Idaho to pass harsher animal cruelty laws through the state legislature.
  • Idaho is ONE OF ONLY THREE states left in the nation that does not have felony punishments for instances of the most shocking and repeated cruelty against animals.
  • Only South Dakota and North Dakota also still lack felony animal cruelty laws.
  • More and more studies have shown a strong link between cruelty to animals and violence towards humans.

It is Time for Voters to Decide if Idaho Needs Harsher Animal Cruelty Laws!

  • Now through April 2012 at least 60,000 signatures from registered voters from across the state must be gathered.
  • If that goal is met, the initiative to strengthen Idaho’s animal cruelty law will go on the November 2012 ballot.
  • Click here for the changes to the current law. Sections that are crossed out will be removed from the current law. Sections that are underlined and bolded are the new additions to the current law.
