We love our IHS Volunteers! Volunteers are an indispensable part of the IHS community. The Idaho Humane Society relies on volunteers to staff mobile adoption units, assist with fundraising events, walk and care for animals at the shelter, foster animals, produce content for our website and help with the day-to-day services offered to the community. The Idaho Humane Society is also governed by an all volunteer board of directors.

There is a wide variety of opportunities for volunteers at the shelter. Click here for more information.

Foster Parents provide in home care for shelter animals. Each year IHS foster parents save the lives of thousands of animals. You can become an IHS foster parent too. Click here for more information.

Students and Short-term Volunteers: The Idaho Humane Society is no longer able to offer short term volunteer opportunities for students at the shelter.

Students can still sign up as a regular, long-term volunteer, please see the details below. Or students can commit their short term hours to doing a project to benefit the shelter, such as a food drive for the Pet Food Pantry.

Steps to becoming an IHS Volunteer

  1. Complete a Volunteer Application and mail to the address listed at the bottom of the application.
  2. When your completed application is received by the volunteer program you'll be sent a letter in the mail with dates and times of upcoming volunteer orientation classes. Every new volunteer must complete a volunteer orientation before they begin volunteering at the shelter. Orientations are usually offered 5 times a month on two Saturday mornings, two Sunday mornings and a Wednesday afternoon.
  3. Once you've received your letter and consulted your calendar, contact the volunteer office by phone or email to reserve your spot in your choosen orientation class.
  4. Attend orientation. Please show up on time so you don't miss any important details and plan on committing about 2 1/2 hours to training at the shelter that day.
  5. Get involved & start volunteering! IHS volunteers are welcomed at the shelter 7 days a week from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. You can also sign up to help with special events, mobile adoption events, and other events out in the community.

For more information or questions about the Volunteer Program please contact the Volunteer Office at (208) 331-8553 or Volunteer@idahohumanesociety.org.
